The Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Maddalena sits at the very edge of the cliff, the coastal road bending around it, the sea pressing in from below, the mountain rising sharply behind. It has no business being there, architecturally speaking. And yet there it is, terracotta roof and golden domes, holding its ground between rock and water the way it has for centuries. The town arranges itself around the church like everything else came second - because it did.
